1938 Gibson L-4 – £2999

NEW ARRIVAL  The 1930’s was a true golden era for Gibson’s archtop line: a period that produced some of the most sought after and famed instruments. Choice Maple and Spruce was abundant, and this guitar is built with stunning pieces of both. Re introduced with this specification in 1935 – it had previously a soundhole – the L-4 is a 16” equivalent to the better known 17” L-5 and L-7. It was highly prized by working players for its warmth, projection and playability. It features a hand-carved Spruce top; hand-carved figured Maple back; Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and bridge, beautiful mother of pearl fingerboard inlays, and fleur-de-lis headstock inlay. This example is in well played condition, with pick marks between the strings and, unusually for a guitar of this age, no cracks or repairs. The tone and projection of the guitar are very impressive, there’s a smooth depth to the bass notes, and a real punch to the trebles. The guitar is voiced beautifully for blues, jazz and swing, but can handle any traditional style you throw at it, and really looks the part. It has a very comfortable neck with easy action, and is a dream to play. It has the kind of vintage vibe that is impossible to replicate in a reissue. The guitar comes in its original hard case.
